    Restoring 62 Dash Pad

The original dash pad on my 62 is in good condition for the exception that the finish looks dull, and the foam padding under it is all dried and falling apart, otherwise no cracks or damage.

    My questions are:

    1. What dye (preferably spray can) is recommended to best match the original color/finish?

    2. Any recommendations on what I can stuff behind the pad to fill the areas where the original foam has fallen out?

    Thanks,

    Tony

I would recommend dye in the liquid form so you could wipe it as opposed to spray (over spray is a nightmare). I have never heard of "re-stuffing" a dashpad but maybe someone here will chime in. Usually they are VERY brittle at that point & replacement is the only option. Good luck, Don H.

Scrape it off and replace it with a new pad - you are NEVER going to be happy with a redye in the long term.

Thanks for the info.... I just thought keeping the original one was best given it was not cracked/torn.

I agree. I enjoy restoring an original part when possible.

              Jim,
Just Dashes seems to only sell dash pads for 1963 or newer Corvettes.

Bruce, They offer a kit for the do-it-yourselfer that includes everything you need to properly redye a dash, and most other interior vinyl and plastic products. I used their kit when restoring a 1967 Buick GS, on the dash, consolete and bucket seat trim pieces. They include directions with photos in the kit and provide telephone technical support. This was 3 years ago.
