In a related question, do you know why there seem to be so many 1938-1964 P&A's that were reprinted in their entirety in October of 1969? I don't see many October 1963 printings of the 1938-1964 P&A (I'm guessing that was the original print date), but the 1969 version seems fairly common.

Why did Chevrolet reprint the 1938-1964 P&A in 1969, but (apparently) not reprint the 1963 or 1965-1967 P&A catalogs in 1969? If you know, does the 1969 printing of the 1938-1964 P&A reflect up to date changes current to 1969 (parts removed from service, superseded part numbers since 1964, etc.), or is it a "snap-shot in time" reprinting of the 1938-1964 P&A catalog just as it was originally published in late 1963?

    Scott------

I know of no reprinting of the 1938-64 P&A Catalog by GM in 1969. Not only do I not know of any, it would be completely contrary to GM's usual practice of publishing catalogs to reprint a catalog which was 5 years obsolete at the time of a 1969 printing. It just would have served no purpose for which GM printed catalogs, and I can't see them printing a catalog for any purpose which did not serve their interests.

So, if such a catalog exists it would be my guess that it was a 1938-64 GM catalog that was "reprinted" by some one else in, apparently, 1969. My guess would also be that such a "reprinting" would have been done without GM's authorization.

The book I have is Original GM, I have attached the first inner page for reference (I had to split the image into 2 to keep the size down). Joe et. al, thanks for your very informative posts, it is always great to reach out to the NCRS community and get really great information on so many topics. Greg

        Hi Joe,

It doesn't make any sense to me either, but these appear to be legitimate GM P&A catalogs:

Picture 1, title page, see eBay item: 320617748390
Picture 2, same catalog, cover, "Effective October 1, 1969"

Picture 3, different example, eBay item # 230404787444 (seller acknowledges the cover is a copy)

Picture 4, a third example (eBay item #150521947364), this one is a 1938-1964 catalog printed in 1970. Apparently the 1969 reprinting of the 1964 P&A catalog was not sufficient. The covers and title pages on these catalogs are identical to the "regular" GM P&A cover pages, except for the dates.

I have not seen this for any other years EXCEPT the 1938-1964 edition. It must have something to do with the 1964 catalog?

Yes I would. If you can still find one, it is quite useful. had it for a long time.

I have no idea why GM would have printed such a catalog. There must have been some "special" reason for it. Given that it was printed 5 years after the last model year covered, I would presume that as far as part discontinuations and supercessions, it was "static" as of 1964 and was simply a re-print of the 1964 catalog.

If discontinuations and supercessions were included, anyone in 1969 would have had all the same information (and more) in a 1938-69 catalog.
