    L-84 engine Damper and wheels

In the process of rebuilding my L-84 engine I would like to replace the damper on the front of the crank shaft. The damper that was on the engine does not seem to be correct for the engine (no fins) and even if it was I would be concerned about the rubber bond between the 2 sections on a 45 year old component. I find new dampers on the Corvette America website but what they show as the damper for standard 1964 engines (their P/N 27560) seems to be what I think is correct for the FI engine, and the damper they list for the FI engine (P/N 27561) seems correct for standard engines. My understanding about what the correct damper for my engine shold be is based on the Adams book and on the Judging Manual written description.

Could someone knowledgeable take a look at those 2 parts and tell me which one is correct (maybe neither one is correct) for a 1964 L-84 engine?

Also can anyone direct me to 4 or 5 original 1964 steel wheels?

    Thanks in advance-Doug

Dampeners can be rebuilt with new rubber for about $100. Google is your friend...

The #27560 is the one that would generally be considered correct for a 1963-64 L-84.

But if it isn't the correct damper for the car, why spend money rebuilding it?

I agree too, not sure why I missed this important point.

              Doug,

I bought a pair of 66 steel wheels at Carlisle a couple years ago. Other than that I would suggest the Driveline, ebay, Craigzoom (searches all of the Craig's lists).

The 64 wheels are difficult to find and expensive. I believe they were asking about $400 per wheel at Carslile.

                  Bob,

They were going for about $250.00 per wheel in 2009. The price sure has gone up!

Here are a couple reference shots for original parts, the wheels are special.

This year at Corvette Carlisle there were several available for 275.00 each.
I didn't buy them but heard about them. Typical price though is 400 and up.
                      Doug,
The finned balancers are dated you know. But I wouldn't worry about the date Doug but you should use an original balancer. If it needs TLC that's no big deal.
Make sure you get the correct bolt, the thick washer and the correct bolts to hold the pulley, etc on.
The big bolt is tough to find: TR logo. 7/16 X 1-3/4 NF. Head has one hole for safety wire (not used). Plating is either black or cad. (I forget)
You have a better shot at finding this identical bolt with no safety hole in the head. A good machine shop can drill this hole for you. (The bolt is case hardened.
Chevy sold a service replacement that typically had an LE logo.
Thick washer is very special and has a small logo on it.
                      Use Loctite on the bolt.
When I used to be able to walk the flea markets you cannot believe how many 8" balancers I would reach down and feel the backside for fins. Now when I go to the fleas it's just to work.
Email me for info on the wheels as it's late. John
