That appears to be a 1989 box and likely a 1989 fuel pump. Nice useable NOS pump but likely has some differences in the casting, stampings and external detail from a 1972 pump.
Hit the nail on the head! Minor casting, stampings and external detail differences!

      Flange Code: 282F = 282nd day (non leap year) = October 9th

Therefore, the character "F" would represent "October" in 1989.
Still have some questions as far as the code, compared to my original (build date of 5/10/72) vs. the NOS and the example above?

One of the more visible differences is the angle of the fuel inlet fitting. We detail that difference in the TIM&JG.
It does appear that the fittings are angled the same on both.

        Both of yours are 40956.

Now compare a 40956 to a pump stamped 40709 -- THAT is where you will find the inlet angle difference. Original 1970 and I think some 1971 LT1 pumps are stamped 40709.

My 70 and 71 original fuel pumps are both stamped 709. I always thought 72's were as well.

And I always thought later 1971 and all 1972 were 40956. I haven't looked it up yet, but one of those pumps has the inlet pointing to the right rear tire and one to the left rear. The later design pump used a formed "S" shaped hose between the pipe and fuel line. The 40709 used, at least in 1970, a straight rubber hose that was bent to accommodate the fuel pipe and pump inlet. If not properly installed this straight hose could kink causing fuel starvation. The pre-formed S-shaped hose and relocation of the fuel pump inlet mitigated that issue.
