67 Gas Cap - Gasket Adhesive

I have just acquired a replacement gas cap for my 67 Corvette. It came with the fiber gasket separate. What kind of adhesive would be best to use on it? Thanks!

I don't believe that there should be any adhesive.

I used 3M Super WeatherStrip Adhesive (#08001). I used the yellow original color, but it is also available in black.

      Use sparingly for best appearance.

I'm with Don on this one.

It's supposed to be loose. Bill

I agree. The cellulosic (cardboard) gasket used for 1963-68 was not attached with any adhesive. However, the neoprene gasket used for 1969-74 was affixed with a neoprene solvent cement.

I've used it on a new style gasket. Gas will attack it in time. Went back to old gasket.

Nobody will know that you used adhesive if you're afraid of losing it. It will eventually stick of it's own accord W/O adhesive.

Gasoline will attack weatherstrip adhesive, which is very simply thick contact cement.

If you want to put a few inconspicuous dabs of adhesive on there just for kicks, then use Permatex Hi-Tack, which is impervious to gasoline.
