What is a survivor for judging?

Where can I find what you can or can't do to an original car before having it judged as a survivor?

Survivor is a term coined by the folks at Bloomington Gold. I would think a quick search of their website should steer you in the right direction. I'll try to find a link and post it for you.

    Here ya go !!

Re: What is a survivor for judging?

As pointed out in the Bloomington Survivor attachment noted in Toms posting, the cars are inspected in 4 primary areas. Pass three and you are a survivor. Two years ago I saw a 58 being judged 2 years ago, it was a fuel injected car with a block stamped CU indicating 270 HP carburetted engine.
Well at least the "C" was right.
It is now a Bloomington Survivor. car.
      Buyer Beware...

      Tom H.--thanks for the help.

If you want it judged in the NCRS Star/Bowtie program, those requirements are in our Judging Reference Manual, completely different from Bloomington.

To correct this statement if it was a typo, passing three of the four does not give you GOLD, but certifies SURVIVOR status. Two different awards.

            Do nothing.
You're never wrong with "doing" nothing if you're interested in an originality award. You can only do too much.

I was asking what can you clean up on it? Can you get all dirt and grease off or pressure wash? Detail it up a bit?

cleaning should be gentle, with great care not to disturb original elements under the dirt, crayon marks, chassis blackout (on solid axles) can easily be removed with overly aggressive cleaning, The Judging Reference manual is a good place to start, along with taking the car to a local NCRS chapter get-together for free advice.

Pressure washing can remove paint from surfaces, it can remove inspection marks, labels etc.

GENTLY clean a car that you are interested in preserving originality for historical purposes.

I used a lot of WD40 and a very large fine artist's brush and was very careful where I applied the WD40. It worked really great on the bare fiberglass underbody, firewall and kickplates. It also gave somewhat of a refreshed look to the bare fiberglass. I used tons of white terry cloth towels to show how much dirt and grime was coming off of the area being worked on.

On the bare metal surface, I used a product call CorrosionX which works very well which I also brushed on.

Here is my thinking and tell me if I am wrong. Lightly knock off dirt and grime under the car on the frame, rear axle, fender wells. Take alittle degreaser around the engine compartment. Wipe down the trunk area. The body has been cleaning up pretty good with a clay bar and a little wax. The chrome had some rust and pitting, but I am using some Nevr-Dull and a wadded up piece of tin foil on the rust/pitted area. I will lightly go over the stainless with a fine steel wool. Anything under the hood to be extra careful with? I know be careful with the hoses on the expansion tank. The PO replaced the radiator hoses and a couple clamps, plug wires/cap. Original owner says it came off the dealer floor 11/61 with red wheels. Can I change them back to original or is that not considered survivor?

Your pictures show that the wheels are already red.

You can't restore a car to Bowtie status. Best read up on the rules and learn more about the concept of untouched originals before undertaking this project.
