    67 coupe air info

Hi, I'm intereseted in purchasing a 67 Coupe, 427/390hp, 4 speed...factory air ? Block casting number- 3904351 which I believe to be correct. Engine suffix -T0203IL which is manual 427, would be any other pertinent numbers for ac car, also the rear spring is 2 leaf should there not be more leafs for a true big block chassis? Also is anyone familiar with Western Wheel Company/Kelsey Hayes rims as to being a repro rim? A Michelin Red Line 165/15 tube type tire?

Hi Sounds right. Have you checked the date on the block and matched up the date on the trim tag?

Would be a nightmare to replicate air on that car. The key is to insure it is truly an original 427 390 hp. Check the rear end code also.

I would follow up here with trim tag and block pad photos for opinions.

I believe the rear spring should be a 7 leaf. I believe they did make the repro wheels and someone probably used that oddball tire size to get it to fit. Most radials are too fat to fit inside. There were several brands of tires and the redlines should be 775x15.

      Joe -

If it's a factory air car, the battery will be on the driver's side, with an access panel in the rear of the inner fender. The rear spring should have nine leaves - the bottom six curved, and the top three flat. Those wheels are reproductions. Post some photos, especially the trim tag, engine compartment, and block stamp pad.

if its an AC car, in addition to what john mentioned, the pass side vent assembly(in the kick panel area) differs from non-AC cars. mike

            Joseph,

I have a '66 390hp AC car. All that's been posted on this thread is correct. There's lots of guys here that would like to help you authenticate the car. John suggested that you post some photos of the trim tag, engine bay and the engine block pad stamp. Definately do so. Nice crisp close-ups.

Another sure way to authenticate this car is to hire an NCRS member to "run the numbers" while inspecting all aspects of the car. Look in the Driveline under "Services and Misc." See Nov/Dec pg. 108, 111. I wish I'd known about NCRS when I bought the '66 in 1988. That's another story, but luckily all her #s match.

Some quick MINIMUM checks for 427/390hp authentication would be: Rear sway bar or evidence once there, halfshaft to Posi-traction caps and bolts vs. u-bolts/nuts, Posi-traction code (unique to 427), tachometer red-line, oil pressure guage range, fuel line shape at the pump, all numbers of the engine block to include broach marks on the stamp pad just to name a few.

As for the AC portion, yes check for the battery access door in the driver's side wheel well. Tons to check in the engine bay. You'll need help there. A quick dead give away for add-on aftermarket AC in the interior is the absence of the center AC register above the clock. Those kits don't use the center duct through the dash.

As for the missing rosette rivet on the VIN tag.....RED FLAG! Proceed with caution. Definately have someone on your side help you with this inspection. Although it was popular in the 70's to install CB radios/stereos in the glovebox area/instrument support (my '66s trim tag was slightly bent to accommodate the unit there) the VIN tag should be UNMOLESTED.

I wish you success. Let us all know how it goes.
            Mike

              Hi Joe

The missing rivet would be a big concern to me. The other info sounds good but I have never seen a rivet fall out and I don't know a reasonable explanation why it would have been removed. I guess this is a case where you really need to post pics for comments and also check the frame VIN.
