70 M-20 Side Cover

Couple questions.

1. Should the trans be in 2nd gear to pull the side cover or another gear?

2. What if any seals are there on the studs where the shift linkage attaches.

The side cover is leaking quite a bit. It was not leaking as much before because the fluid was probably low.
