    1965 Corvette Starter 1107320

I purchased this starter at Carlisle in August and wanted to post some pics showing how the solenoid is sealed to the main case. This starter looks to have never been apart and still has it's 1114344 solenoid.

The starter also shows traces of black paint on the solenoid and front nose and no evidence of paint on the bakelite solenoid cover. I am not sure what material is used to seal the solenoid but ultra black probably will work as well for this.

The screws attaching the solenoid to the main case I used on my 63 I think because they have captured lock washers so these are probably supposed to be black also.

My 65 still has its original solenoid. It is a 1114356.

I wonder what the difference in these solenoids is, this starter has never been apart and I am confident the 1114344 is the original solenoid.

I believe both were used in production but the 356 was also available in service.

Since the 320 starter was also used on the Nova, Chevelle, Impala etc, I wonder if those applications used a different solenoid.

              Jim,

I don't see how that would happen. I think the 327 engine got the same starter weather Corvette or Impala so the solenoid would be the same IMO..

As I stated earlier, I believe they used both solenoids and at some time the 344 disappeared from production. In the archives there are posts from 67 owners with 344 solenoids.

                Tim,

Years ago I studied a few ORIGINAL starters with ORIGINAL solenoids and this is what I found:

                327 starter "1107320", "6E31" (May 31, 1966), solenoid "1114344" w/"3" --- from 1966 Chev. 327 "T0527HAR" (May 27, 1966) --- Orange, MA --- I sold this starter to Pete L. in January 1990.

                283 starter "1107247", "6E20" (May 20, 1966), solenoid "1114344" w/"C" --- from 1966 Chev. 283 "T0526GF" (May 26, 1966) --- Templeton, MA

                283 starter " 1107247", "4A6" (Jan. 6, 1964), solenoid "1114344" w/"4" --- from 1964 Chevrolet convertible 283 "T0127D" (Jan. 27, 1964) --- Wilton, NH

                283 starter "1107247", "5H10" (August 10, 1965), solenoid "1114344" w/ "2" --- from 1966 Chev. --- Wilton, NH

I do NOT know the meaning of the digits "3", "C", "4", and "2" on my (or formerly my) 1114344 solenoids and there does not seem to be any correlation with the starter date codes.

GM # 1114356 appears in my 1964 Chevrolet Parts Catalog, my 1972 Corvette Parts Catalog, and all my Chevrolet parts catalogs in between as a service part for 1957-1972 Corvettes.

I believe that the 1114344 is the correct solenoid for 1964-1966 Corvettes w/327.

                Dave
