I'm looking for a product that really does what it says that it will do. I have a bunch of small rusty items including pliers and wrenches that have been in my trailer toolbox, all outside. What have you used that will remove the surface rust on these things? Ideally it would be a liquid that I can simply drop these parts into.

Re: Rust removal products
The best product I have found is Evapo-Rust. Non-caustic liquid and works well. I buy it at Harbor Freight.

Re: Rust removal products
Evapo-Rust is good but try plain ole vinegar. The acid will take the rust off and it's non toxic. Let the tools soak a while and then be sure to rinse them in water- Top

Re: Rust removal products
Naval jelly works well. It is phosphoric acid based. Muriatic acid is hydrochloric acid so be careful using it.- Top

Re: Rust removal products
Safest Rust Remover. Based out of NJ. It's a water based rust remover. Works like a charm. I've used it on everything from tools, to rusty side pipes, to original hardware. I highly recommend it!

Re: Rust removal products
Mix molasses with water, 1 part molasses to 10 parts water and let it soak, cheap, easy and it works. You can buy feed grade molasses very cheap and soak giant things. Sounds goofy, but it works and is non-toxic, and won't hurt plastic, paint, etc.
Also electrolysis works, though hydrogen embrittlement may be a factor on some parts that are subject to stress/loads.
I've tried/used both, as well as blasting.- Top

Re: Rust removal products
Evapo-rust is by far the best rust removing product I have ever used and I have tried them all. The metal comes out like brand new stampings. Some pieces I can remove from the solution within an hour completely clean.

Re: Rust removal products
If you use muratic acid, which works great mix it about 50/50 with water and let soak about 8 hours to start. I used it in a heavily rusted metal gas tank and left it a couple days which was probably longer thab I should have. The tank came out looking like new metal.- Top

Re: Rust removal products
Be careful with muriatic acid. Nasty stuff. One whiff of it in a closed area and you'll be respectful towards it for life. Don't let it touch aluminum.- Top

The least expensive-yet-works solution for steel that is harmless to paint, chrome, plastic is simple: molasses and water, 1 part molasses to 10 parts water, drop it in and let it soak. Feed grade molasses is cheap in bulk. It will work on cast iron, also, but leave it in too long and it will begin to break it down.
It works, I was surprised, better than electrolysis, though not as fast
Using store purchase of 16oz, water not included in price
$2.50/Gal
There's a bunch of home remedies containing vinegar, lemon juice, borax, and so forth.- Top
