I may need to rebuild an original 62 fuel pump. Was there just a recent article written on this in the Restorer or Solid Axle magazine?

I went through my Restores to 2005 and didn't find anything. Also went through my collection of John Hickley articles and found nothing but he still might have wrote one and I missed it. Try houghton@classicpreservation.com he had a rebuild kit for a 1969 chevy boat motor I have and it came with instructions.

The process is really straight forward and should be covered in the Shop Manual. 'Special' things to remember when doing the overhaul include:
(1) Take clear notes regarding the orientation of the pumps' center body relative to the top. There were several different versions of essentially the same part with the difference being the 'clocking' of the center body (accommodate fuel line inlet/outlet geometry specific to a given vehicle).
(2) IF your overhaul kit contains pump valves, remember to note their orientation before you R&R the originals. It's easy to get them in backwards--the rebuilt pump won't work!
(3) Once you have the main pump diaphram replaced (it can be tricky taking some practice as the connecting rod has to 'hook' over the pump arm), take your time installing the main body. Get the orientation right and LOOSELY install the center section body to upper pump attaching screws.
Now, depress the pump's drive lever to raise the diaphram and, while holding it depressed, tighten several screws around the body. It's posible to 'sandwich' the diaphram between the pump's center and upper body components in its fully relaxed position and then RIP the diaphram the first time the pump is actuated!
This was more of a threat with the old/original canvass based diaphrams than it is with today's modern plastic based parts. But, it's still a good idea to pre-load the diaphram before 'locking' the center and upper body parts that retain it...Last edited by Jack H.; November 5, 2010, 10:35 AM.- Top

One more important thing to remember when rebuild a fuel pump is to broack all the mating surfaces so everything is good and flat.- Top

As Bruce mentioned when rebuilding your fuel pump make sure you use parts that will stand up to alcohol aka ethanol.

Here is the part number of a 63 fuel pump rebuilt kit that I bought from this company on ebay. 38013132078 . I looked at the kit quite closely and will tell you the material used and colors of such are far from original but they are supposed to do the job. I didn't get to use the kit as a customer was at the house and I sold it to him . Cost is less than 50.00
If anyone knows of a good FP rebuilt kit for ethanol how about letting us know.
So you say your pump ain't leaking now and everything is just dandy. That's good news But it's not gonna be. JD
I think Tim is tying to tell you to "broack" (?) flatten the surfaces of your pump. Means get yourself a granite surface plate and lap/sand the machined surfaces flat. Very easy job and quite rewarding.
Now to go google broack.
