Never underestimate the power of marketing and deceptive advertising. Just look at the recent political campaigns - both candidates and propositions.

I think the best way to prevent deposit formation is to do Italian tuneups at every opportunity.

I have run my '65 fuelie for the last 15 years on nothing but Sunoco and then Shell 93 and 94 octane, respectively. No problems at all once the unit was rebuilt and tuned correctly. If, after sitting for a few minutes on a very hot day, you don't use at least 3/4 throttle before cranking you will be flooding it. You then need to feather the throttle for a few seconds, or drive off at once. It works fine.
I think everyone that is having problems should look at how the unit is set up. They do like to idle a little rich, and not at 500rpm. Who the hell cares if it idles at 1100rpm if it runs right? The tuning specs for '64 and '65's say "at least 900rpm".
