    Clutch pressure plate and disc

I have been studying the threads on replacement clutch pressure plates and discs for my '62 340hp car.
I guess depending on who you ask, I could go either BB or diaphram and it would work ok.
But, I think I will use the diaphram type.
Is 10.0" the correct disc size?

And would this product from Carolina Clutch be sufficiant?

Exactly same Luk clutch and supplier I used on our 62 340....car not driven yet but quality of components seemed excellent.....no trouble with installation.

10" is the correct size for C1. Overall, I think a diaphragm type is a good choice for a street clutch. GM changed from "3 finger" (Borg&Beck) to diaphragm type for the 1963 model year and never looked back. They didn't make this change and stick with it for 48 years because the "3 finger" type worked just as good.

It was more likely a monetary decision. 3 finger is better than a diaphragm in a performance application.

There is considerable discussion in the archives on using a diaphram clutch and problems related to the strength of the Godizilla spring....you should be aware of this and decide for yourself....i decided on the diaphram clutch

Point of interest: What is the official NCRS position on using a diaphram clutch in lue of 3 finger type ? How does it differ from switching to electronic ignition instead of conventional points setup.?

how would the ncrs even know or probably care seeing it is inside the engine, they aren't taken apart like racing

I don't think so. In 1963, the 1962 Corvette "3 finger" style pressure plate assembly (also SERVICE for 57-61), GM #3816144, carried a list price of $28.50. At the same time, the 1963 Corvette diaphragm type pressure plate assembly, GM #3793476, carried a GM list price of $29.50. Both used the same friction disc, GM #3815217, which carried a list price of $18.90.

While prices for SERVICE parts do not represent the cost of the same parts to PRODUCTION, they should show the relative cost of one part to another. So, in this case, the cost of the two types of clutches is comparable with, possibly, the diaphragm clutch costing slightly more.

Re: Clutch pressure plate and disc

I did see considerable discussion of the "Gorilla spring" issues when using the diaphram clutch plates.
I feel confident that we can overcome any obsticles that arise.
I also have been seeing a clutch disc size of 10.4" as opposed to 10.0" listed for this application. Is there any advantage to using the slightly larger disc for this? This vendor lists the larger disc for other Corvette applications.
