Briggs and Stratten Key "R" or "No R"

When did the R appear on Briggs and Stratton keys?

The best information we have is that this change occurred at calendar year 1963 at Briggs & Stratton. I don't know what the 1963 Corvette TIM&JG indicates but it probably took some time until Briggs & Stratton lock packages that includes the keys showed up in Production. Pete

The Judging Guide just says it's a B&S Octagon key, no mention of an 'R'.

The "R" appears on the lower corner of the B&S logo on the key. I trust it is the "registered trade mark" of B&S.

Anyone with original keys out there????

Louis - Correct. The "R" is the Registered Trademark symbol, i.e., R in a circle. Pete

So if the change occured sometime during 63, then we are safe to say that all 64-66 and up have an "R" on the key?

              Louis,

You are correct. I would expect that all 64 thru 66 Briggs & Stratton GM keys would have the "R". And I would expect most '63 model year Corvettes to have keys with the R beginning sometime in Jan or Feb of 1963.

Attached is a photo from the "key hole" article Pete Lindahl and I wrote for the Restorer 4 or 5 years ago that shows a no-R key on the left and an R key on the right.
