      Wouldn't a little lacquer thinner on a rag confirm if it is lacquer or not?

        My suggestion exactly. Take some lacquer thinner and rub an area like the door jamb where the hinge is. It should "easily" pull color. If enamal, it will not.

        No matter however. Enamal can look very decent rubbed out. 1000 grit and water, and then power buff with old fashion white rubbing compound will bring that car back to life, even if you remove much of the paint. The real test will be if in 4 months, the paint goes flat, and it will sooner or later, then you have to do the polish all over again.
