C1 Third Arm - Painted or not?

For my 1960 project car, is the third arm and support painted or natural cast finish?

    Thanks,

    Don -

The part drawing (#3731801) doesn't specify any paint instructions or notes.

This list is great.. Does something like this exist for a 1962?

            Thanks,

            Tony

              Thanks Rickhard.

Now I will not need to ask any more paint questions for my restoration

This is a great list. Wished I had it last year when I was doing most of my paint work. Wondering how much of it is valid for 57 cars. I would think most of it is. Can anyone post the differences? -Dan-

                  Dan,
This list is fairly consistent for all solid axle cars.
I did this research years ago when I started the restoration of my 1960 and I approached Dwight Farmer (58-60 team leader at that time) and asked him for the magic list of what to finish each part. We both had a great laugh over that question, so I decided to start researching as many what we now call bow-tie cars as possible.
I vetted this list with a lot of knowledgeable people before publishing it in the Restorer in (I believe) 2002.
Over the years I have found this list to be still very accurate for the 58-62 cars, with a few production modifications over the model years.

                  Good Luck,
                  Richard

Thanks Richard. While I have owned my Corvettes for 4 or 5 decades, I have not been active with them until a couple of years ago, so 2002 Restorer is before me.

I believe most of your list is accurate for pre-1958s. Things like the generator are different - tach drive.

I kinda made my own list last year - yellow paper and not anywhere as complete as yours. I will have to scrub it against your list for accuracy. -Dan-

                        Richard,

You list the Tie Rods as being painted, but the TIM&JG says the Tie Rods and Tie Rod Ends are not painted. Do you know if the guide has changed since you put your list together. For preservation I would like to paint everything I can without taking judging hits.

                        Thanks,

I uncovered similar marks on my '62 when rebuilding the front end (about 40K miles) but it was well hidden under the black paint/preservative applied at the factory. Also hat the opportunity to see two "Bowtie" '61 cars at the convention in 1989? one had been "dolled up" and all the factory "preservative" had been removed showing the paint marks. The one owner TOTALLY untouched car next to it had all the "blackout" paint still on it and none of the paint marks were visible. Restore to your taste, but the judging guides may be revised (sometime) if we really want to get serious about "as left the factory"

If you look closely at some of the assembly line photos, for example in Noland's book, it APPEARS that JUST BEFORE engine installation and later body drop, the complete rolling chassis was black ALL OVER. This compares with what MOST of the KNOWLEDGEABLE people have witnessed in the past. It is interesting to see the paint markings which were applied to various parts during their manufacture/machining/assembly processes, but actual correctness would seem to be that none of these markings were visible when the cars rolled out the back door of the St. Louis plant.

Now, once again, I'll inquire about the paint markings-------------which I've asked several times in the past with ZERO answers provided.
On multiple parts, mainly chassis/suspension/steering parts, there have been various colors applied (blue, white, yellow, green, orange, etc). And they appear to have been semi haphazzardly applied with a paint brush as a daub, stripe, circle, etc.
DOES ANYONE ON THE PLANET KNOW THE MEANING OR APPLICATION OF ANY OF THE COLORS ON ANY OF THE VARIOUS PARTS?????????????????????????
