Doe the m22 gears cause more vibration that I would feel in the shifter than the m21's ? I blew up the m20 wide ratio and had the new maserio m22 wide ratio gears installed and notice that I have more vibration in the shifter. I also had a new ring and pinion put in my old pig at the same time, so I am first trying to eliminate one thing at a time, the shifter vibration seems worse when the car is cold and gets beter as it warms up. If I am going down the road at 40 mph and push in the clutch, the vibration goes away, I put the front joint back in the original location and have tried flipping the rear joint with no success. Ujoints are new, should I replace the ujoints and have it balanced, the new ujoints were put in this spring, but I did not have it balanced at the time, shifter has always been a hurst mounted to the trans. I did not have this vibration before making both changes at once.

Re: M22 gears vibration
Jeff,
I think when you pushed the clutch and the vibe went away you eliminated the driveshaft and rear end as your source of vibration.
I believe the M22 gears are cut at a different angle and it got the name (rock crusher). that may be what you are feeling.

Re: M22 gears vibration
Jeff, check the RPMS the vibration starts at when driving, then push the clutch in and repeat that RPM range where the vibration starts in netural , see if its still there. if so there may be something out of balance , possiable pressure plate imbalance.New England chapter member, 63 Convert. 327/340- Chapter/Regional/national Top Flight, 72 coupe- chapter and regional Top Flight.- Top

Re: M22 gears vibration
Vibration is felt anytime I am on the gas, I am running polyglas tires, it felt better today than yesterday, I think the tires may have something to do with it, but does it makes sense that it would be worse when cold if the tires have flat spots from sitting.but you would think it would not change when you push in the clutch. Maybe the gear cut of the the rock crusher gears cause more vibration when cold, being that they are straiter cut and I believe less helical than regular m21 gears.- Top

Re: M22 gears vibration
if he pushes the clutch in and the vibration go's away that makes the suspicious area forward of the transmission unless the power on the drive line is moving something out of place.

Re: M22 gears vibration
That puts the source forward of the clutch. Pop the fan belts off briefly to eliminate any of the engine-driven accessories as the source; if you still have the vibration with the belts off, it's engine-related.- Top

Re: M22 gears vibration
Sometimes engine vibrations can sometimes be RPM sensative, So when pushing in clutch engine drops to a idle, causing the vibration to go away. So clutch forward may come into play.Last edited by Edward J.; November 1, 2010, 11:03 AM.New England chapter member, 63 Convert. 327/340- Chapter/Regional/national Top Flight, 72 coupe- chapter and regional Top Flight.- Top

Re: M22 gears vibration
Jeff,
I know you are talking about a fresh transmission but take a look at this thread. Just another place to look after you have checked everything else.

Re: M22 gears vibration
I am leaning towards johns idea of the accessories. The vibration goes away by pushing in the clutch and letting it go to idle. If I rev the motor up the vibration is felt slightly in the clutch pedal. Pilot bushing is new. My power steering pump was low On fluid and I have been hearing some noises when I first turn the car after being parked. Any other ideas, water pump is new- Top

Is the bell housing centered? Mine required new offset pins after rebuilding the engine. Just a thought.Attached Files- Top
