    215 70R 15 vs 225 70R 15 (photos)

    I'm getting new BF Goodrich tires on my 71 vette. I currently have 225's on the car now. I'm curious if anyone has 215's on an early C3? If so, do you have pictures?

    I want to keep the original look. Is there a big/noticeable difference between these sizes?

    Thanks,
    Greg

    I don't have a picture with me now - but I had P225's on the car, then got a new set of P215's. They look more inline with the width of a real F70 tire. The 225's were noticably wider and a smidge taller.

    I like the 215 look better.......

    When I get back home tomorrow I will grab a pic of the car and post it up for you.

      I've attached a couple pictures of my 69 that has 215/70 tires on it.

      I like the look. Fat tires on an early C3 just seem out of place to me.

          Hi Greg,
          I feel that the height of the tire is as important or even more so than the width. A shorter a tire is quite noticable since it doesn't fill the wheel well opening like the F70 tires did. I like the look of a tire that's close to 27" tall which is just about a .10" taller than the Goodyear originals.
          Regards,
          Alan

            John,

            Perfect! Beautiful car!!! Thank you! Once I see Bills, I'll have a great visual. Bill's car has the same flairs as mine, so that will help as well.

            Thank you again!

                these are 225's, is there really that much of a difference?

                  Thanks Roy! Are yours 60's or 70's?? That's what I'm trying to figure out....is there that much difference from the 215's to 225's?? I hope Bill can provide a picture of his 215's from the rear quarter looking down the side towards the front. That may give me an indication of the difference. Thanks again...awesome car!

                    Gregg, Mine are 225 70 R15's and my spare fits very easily in the spare tire carrier

                      All------

                      Here are the specs:

                      original F-70-15 (Goodyear Speedway Wide Tread)

                      overall diameter= 26.97"

                      section width= 8.95"

                      tread= 6.5"

                      215-70-15 (typical)

                      overall diameter=26.6"

                      section width= 8.9"

                      tread=6.6"

                      225-70-15 (Goodyear Eagle GT II)

                      overall diameter= 27.4"

                      section width= 9"

                      tread= 7"

                      I'll also point out something that I've mentioned previously: I don't know of any 215-70-15 tire currently available that's approved for use on a wheel wider than 7". All 1969-82 Corvettes use wheels that are 8" wide. Can a 215-70-15 tire be installed on an 8" wide wheel? Yes. Is a 215-70-15 tire approved for use on an 8" wide wheel by the tire manufacturers and USDOT? No.

                        I think the 225s fill out the wheel wells nicely without being to big. When I purchased the car, the previous owner had 255s on there....much too big.

                          To ad to Joe's comments about DOT approved widths, the mid 60's "C2" cars with 5.5. or 6" rims...the 215x70's are the widest that is approved for that rim size, the 225 is not.

                            I don't think that 225-70-15's will fit on a C2 without rubbing, anyway.

                              Attached are a couple of pictures of my '70 LT1 with 215's. They work fine, and no issues. If you research previous posts, you'll find some discussion in reference to 215's vs. 225's. Some have reported rubbing with the 225's.
