Cathy,
Tom Howey had a super article on how to redo the hood opening mechanism for a 58-60 Corvette in one of the last several issues of the Restorer. Your mechanism may be a bit different, but a lot of the main principles should be the same, such as replacing the wire inside the cable with the next gauge down.
