    72 carburetor date

In the Spring of 72, for a Flint built LT1, was the carburetor installed when the engine was built, or later in the produuction sequence?

If the carburetor was installed during engine build, what would be the expected date range for the 6239-1?

    John,
I have a 71 LT-1 with a engine build date of March 30, 1971. It has the correct Holley list # 4801 (71 LT-1 only) with a date of August 1970. (O82). That would be 7 or 8 months prior to engine build. The rule of thumb is 6 months or less. It went through the scrutiny of Bowtie and Flight judging and passed muster every time. Shows these odd carbs were most likely made in batches.

Regardless of your year of Corvette or engine size -- if it has a carburetor, it was installed at the vehicle assembly plant -- in your case that was St. Louis.

Easy way to tell what was installed at the vehicle assembly plant: If the part number is listed in the AIM (Assembly Instruction Manual) it was installed at the vehicle assembly plant. Don't have an AIM? Click on the NCRS store button at the top of the page. A reference library for your Corvette will make your ownership experience a whole more pleasant.

Thank you Dave and Terry for taking the time to help. I have never known anyone in purchasing or production planning at Chevrolet, so it's interesting to learn that a carburetor is dated 7 months before the engine build date. Dave, what is the build date of your 71? Our 72's engine date is March 1st, while the 988/421 coupe was built June 2nd.

Terry, Stands to reason that engine accessories are installed during vehicle production. An engine shipping palet is no place for a carburetor.
Good advice; I need to buy another AIM after giving my 30 year old copy to my son-in-law.

        Work and travel safely.

          Jiohn,
The build date of my 71 is May 11, 1971. 5 1/2 weeks after engine build.

              Kevin,
Thank you for taking the time to help and for the link to web photos of your nice 71 and 72. Photos shows there might be a place for our 72 in the NCRS community. We are the 2nd owner of our 72, purchased it in 1980 with 68k miles, now has 72k miles. It's never been to an NCRS event.

Is NCRS Duntov status equivalent to bloomington's survivor or benchmark level? Does the car have to be judged at local chapter before going to an event outside our region? Where are those types of NCRS rules defined?

                John,

We would love to see your 1972 at an NCRS meet.

The rules you are asking about are in the Judging Reference ManualJudging Reference Manual. Bloomington Gold will send you an Owner's Advisory if you contact them and ask for it. Search them out on the Internet with your favorite search engine for more information about them and their rules.

I concur with Dave's statement about the holley carburetor being batch produced. My 71 LT-1 #1914 Sept build had a 4801 dated 082 1970 Aug. 2nd week about a month before the car.

                    Terry,
Thanks for your patience and guidance. Just ordered TIM and Judging Reference manuals. Does NCRS use a secure server that members can use to share photos of their cars with other NCRS members?

                    Thanks,
                    John P.
