the cable from my tranny to the steering column is unhooked, and when i pull the cable out, the car wont move. i know this is an interlock to the tranny, but what controls it, i see where it hooks to the steering column, but that dont make any sense to me, because it doesnt seem that the place it connects moves at all. I imagine the prev. owner disconnected it for a reason, is something not working correctly here?

Re: transmission cable
The cable locks the transmission and the steering when the transmission is placed in reverse. Any kink in the cable will make the operation inoperable. That is probably why it is unhooked. Then you can shut the car off in any gear. Look for a kink on either end of the cable. If you find one it is time for a replacement. It's a good life!

Re: transmission cable
Justin the interlock cable is to lock the steering column when the transmission is shifted into reverse. Allowing the ignition key to be moved to the locked position and removed. After starting you car and moving the shifter out of reverse to any other gear unlocks the steering column. This cable is a problem when not adjusted properly causing owner frustration and eventual disconnection of the lock out cable. At ether the transmission or the steering column.

Re: transmission cable
hey, what do you guys think of installing the new electonic ignition modules that fit in the same space as the points fit in? think it detracts from the originality? this car is very, very original so i am concerned in changing it from original.- Top

Re: transmission cable
As Lyle stated the final adjustments are made at the steering shaft engine wall mount plate. It is a trial and error adjustment by making a slight movement of the plate assembly to get the right amount of cable movement to lock and unlock the steering wheel. Plus also to prevent binding in the cable due to much cable length at ether end and the correct input angle at the steering shaft bracket.
Best done with 2 persons one adjusting the bracket engine side and one securing the fasteners inside. Then the person inside making very slow movements of the shifter to prevent cable kinking while the other the other person is watching the cables movements.
Hope this helps.
