    Drive shaft torque

What is the torque for the 5/16 -24 bolts 1 7/16 long that hold on the universals at the front of the driveshaft at the tranny. This is for a 73, SB, manual

This info is not shown in the AIM.

    Steve------

It's not shown in the AIM because the driveshaft yoke and driveshaft were supplied as an assembly to St. Louis. However, the torque is shown for the rear u-joint strap bolts and it's exactly the same as for the front bolts----12-20 lb/ft.

      Thanks again Joe,
I thought both might be the same.

But I thought I'd check, since I thought the half shaft spindle and diff yoke universal joint bolts should be both black phosphate. I was surprised from last wks thread that the bolt on the diff is actually zinc.

        Steve-----

Well, the bolts were installed a 2 totally different places. The front bolts were installed wherever the driveshaft and transmission yoke assemblies were manufactured, maybe Chevrolet-Buffalo or Three Rivers. The rear bolts were installed at St. Louis. So, it's not, at all, surprising that the bolts were different as to finish and, perhaps, other features.

Steve, My rear half shaft bolts on my 72 auto.car inboard one were zinc bolts w/blk phos. split washers and the outboard ones were blk. phos. the rear driveshaft bolts where blk. phos. front and back.

            Thanks Edward,
I had asked about the aboard bolts but made the mistake of assuming that the inboard would also be black phosphate, the same as the outboard.

Guess I'll be taking off the inboards and zinc plating. I think I'll try and just plate the heads to avoid the hydrogen problem since I have the Caswell kit for plating.
