    '65 Engine code label

I have '65 300hp 4spd, engine code HF. I was told a while back by a local meet judge that I should have a label on the back of the right hand valve cover identifying the engine code. As I checked this out I find no reference in the judging manual for the label and the corvette parts suppliers which provide labels show them applicable starting in 1966. Am I correct that this was just a judging error and I should not have one of these labels on the car?

Dave, go into the achives and there should be some examples of the labels, you may need the measurements and then play around on your computer, you should be able to make your own. they maynot be 100% correct but at least you will be credited for having something there, I believe that what everyone does if they are not making the labels. There are a few guys on the TDB that may make them for you.

The labels made on midyear cars never really were stuck to the covers that well and they just fell off.

        Tom,

It sounds like you're confirming what I questioned in my post. I think it was a judging error and I don't think I should have a label. I'm just trying to confirm that this is the case.

I cannot confirm it at all, but I have never seen this label on one. Better wait til somebody who knows for sure chimes in.

            DAve,

Dumb question alert, but have you checked the 1965 TIM&JG? What does it say about a suffix code label?

Dave's original post states that the JG makes no mention of the label. i don't have one handy to verify.

Sorry I missed that in the OP. Perhaps there is a reason there is no mention of it.

After all the judging guide can not cover everything that is NOT on the car. It is hard enough to cover most things that ARE on the cars.

I don't believe they had started to use the label in '65. They marked the back of the passenger head with the code in yellow or white paint,... see picture. this is a base engine, HE with wrong valve covers. The left head is marked with a "6" for st louis??

John, I believe you to be correct. The M. F. Dobbins Stingray fact book seems to confirm your statement.

Thanks everybody for your replies. I think my assumption of no label req'd is correct and I just ran into a minor judging error.
