1960 correct painting of brake back plate

I know this has been asked and answered for a lot of different C1s but I can't fine it specific for the 58-60. The TIM & JG says "The brake backing plates are painted with a low grade gloss black paint..." It does not distinguish between the front or back side.

I have found comments in various thread that for some models the back side of the backing plate was painted and the front side was natural metal.

Given what the TIM & JG says for the 58-60 am I safe to paint both sides?

    Thanks,
    Don

    Don -

It was painted originally with the drum in place, so the front side (inside the drum) wasn't painted; if you paint the inside, nobody but you will ever know.

So I will not get dinged at judging? I would much prefer to paint.

Re: C1 correct painting of brake back plate

Does anyone have a good way to clean the undercoat and other junk that has adhered to the backing plates? I have tried to bead blast and wire wheel it off but it isn't working very well. I would appreciate any suggestions.
        thanks!

I took mine to my engine machine shop and they hot tanked them. That took off all the crud. Then I sandblasted them to remove the rust and painted them. Came out real good. -Dan-

            Donald -

Judging won't be an issue - the outer face of the backing plate can't be seen unless you remove the brake drum.

              Thanks John,

That's what I needed to know.

                Thanks Dan,

I also had someone recommend a radiator repair shop and use and acid tank. Looks like I will be making a few calls tomorrow.
