This may be a dumb question but what color is the timing chain cover on a 66 base(300hp) engine? On the car I am restoring someone took a black spray can and painted the water pump(which I know should be orange) and the rest of the front of the engine and painted them black. Also the metal clamp which holds the distributor in place should be what color? Mine is painted orange(again the same guy with th3e black spray can). Now for the unexpected find; I removed the passanger seat which I think has never been out of the car and I found an original key stuck under the carpet, it was kind of like christmas. Thanks for any help, Bob.

The timing cover is engine orange - it (and the water pump and balancer) were in place when the engine was painted. The distributor hold-down clamp was also in place during painting; the distributor was covered with a coffee can, but it's not unusual to see orange overspray on the clamp.- Top

Re: 66 Engine paint question and cool find
Yes, the pulley was installed at St. Louis. Paint coverage on the clamp varied a lot, but I'd expect to see at least some overspray.- Top
