Hello; I have a AMMCO brake shoe arcing machine that I would like to use to arc my NOS 1963 Z06 brakes shoes. Does anyone know how to use this machine or have original instruction sheet? Any help would be appreciated. Please call me at 732-583-5378. Thanks, Andy

To answer your question, as I recall, all you did was mount the shoe in the machine, and accurately setup the true radius/diameter on the machine as measured from a freshly cut/trued brake drum. Then you just turned the machine on and rotated the shoe thru the cutting arc you just setup, and after just a few arc rotations, the shoe surface was smooth and the machine was not cutting any more material. Only took a couple minutes with the mounting/setup being the only thing that took any time.
I would actually NOT recommend that you use that machine with NOS brake shoes. I'm guessing that since the shoes are NOS they contain lots of asbestos. That arcing machine will create a dust cloud of asbestos that you don't want any part of. There's a really good reason why these machines are not used anymore. Also, all it's doing is matching the shoe to the brake drum for even contact/wear pattern, and that will happen automatically anyway just by driving the car...the machine just hastened the matching process. FWIW, we typically only used the machine when a drum was cut down...usually when you were matching new shoes with new drums, they didn't need any shoe arcing.Last edited by Jack H.; October 19, 2010, 10:06 AM.- Top

Even current day brake shoes, pads and clutch disks MAY contain asbestos. Those are some of the exemptions to the asbestos prohibitions. AssUme any brake or clutch material contains asbestos unless testing proves otherwise.Terry- Top

Andy - another consideration. The prep of the drums (J65 at least) is done with a stone not the cutter. So if the drum is to be done with a stone would there be a problem cutting the shoe? Would cutting it hurt the sintered metallic linings? Just another thing to consider.- Top

Andy, I hope by now you bought a good respirator as we discussed. The post here about the asbestos dust is scary at best.
And you fellows out there that brag that your glass bead cabinet puts out zero dust with the good vacuum take note. Please wear a respirator no matter what. Too many of my friends are gone because of lung issues and it's sad. JD- Top
