1967 Clutch push rod - Is this Factory black overspray? Or was this done later?

The clutch push rod appears to have black paint along one side (flat, like the engine bay firewall paint), but bare metal on the other side. Did it come this way from the factory, or is this something done by a previous owner?

    Thanks,

    Scott

    Scott -

The pushrod and boot was installed on the Hard Trim Line, long after the Paint Shop; it didn't have any black paint on it.

      Hi John,

I'll clean it off then, so it's like the rest of the clutch rod, bare metal as it came from the factory.

If that black paint might have been original, I was going to leave it - it helps a lot to find out one way or the other because I don't want to do something wrong that can't be undone

      Thank you,

      Scott

I don't think these rods were bare steel. I believe they were phosphate finished.

          Hi Joe,

Thanks for the heads-up, I just checked Dobbins' book and you're right, "clutch rod through firewall" is listed under the "Black Phosphate" section.

Were the 4-speed shifter linkage rods black phosphate finished too?

Edit: The '67 JG says "the shift linkage, rods, swivels, nuts and clips have a phosphate finish". Doesn't say black or gray, just phosphate. I searched the archives and found three Threads on shift linkage phosphate, but they were all about 1965 shifter linkage. There was no clear agreement on whether the shifter linkage was black phosphate, gray phosphate or natural. I'm going to have the shift-linkage restored, and I would like to do it as original. If the clutch push-rod has the same finish as the shift-linkage, I would like to have it finished at the same time.

Is there any more recent information on what is correct since the 2005 printing of the 1967 JG?

The clutch fork push rod was also phosphate finished. The early C3 shifter rods were natural finish. I do not recall if the C2 were the same or phosphate finished.

As far as "gray phosphate" or "black phosphate" goes, it varies from part-to-part. Sometimes the finish comes out pretty much light gray and sometimes almost totally black. Many are shades in-between.

Thanks Joe, I won't be too concerned then with the color of the gray/black phosphate coating. Sounds like it might be helpful to start a new Thread on the correct finish for the 1967 shifter linkage, since I didn't see that information in the archives and the info on 1965 linkage was not recent or conclusive.
