Weird Chassis Banging upon acceleration- 1962

Ok, I have been trying to find this banging/thumping with no luck.

    Symptoms:
    1. The banging is a loud thump that sounds like something is hitting the frame just below/in front of my feet and I can feel it. Not really a metal wacking metal sound, and it does not appear to be in any the drive train components.
    2. If I am going slow and then accelerate quickly I get this banging that feels like it is under my feet. Does not do it all the time.. maybe 10%
    3. It also does it some sometimes if I am turning, accelerating, and going over a bump.

    I have checked:
    1. All front end components (including steering box mounting, wheel drums/bearings, linkages, etc.). Checked bolt torque.
    2. All points on the frame for broken welds/mounts. Visual inspection.
    3. 2 front motor mounts and tranny mount. Checked bolt torque and inspected mounts.
    4. The exhaust seems solid, however, there is not much space around the pipes as it goes through the frame, but i do not see any hit marks.
    5. Clutch Z bar an linkage. Visual only
    6. Even checked out the rear end components. Checked bolt torque, and visual.
    7. I chocked the front wheels so they do not move, as someone gently tried to hit the gas and released the clutch to move the car forward so I could see anything moves, and nothing.

    Any ideas?

    Tony

Sure sounds like the Motor mount on the left side of the engine, But your # 7 should have allowed you to see the engine lifting on the left side when you applied force. maybe it wasn't enough force to cause it to lift ??

Generally it's the exhaust--it crosses through the frame 4 times. The best way to adjust it is to loosen all three nuts that hold the flange to the exhaust manifold and then as you tighten them, watch which way it moves the pipes within the frame holes. You can adjust them by the sequence you use.

Did you replace or move anything prior to this banging? Has it always done this? I had this problem on a 62 once and it was because the front motor mounts were worn and it let the engine shift from side to side. New mounts and centering the engine cured the banging. Just my 2 cents

                Tony,

Mike's right, it's probably your exhaust, but it is hitting for a reason. John and Terry are on the right track. Even though you checked the motor mounts, I think that is your problem.
