    Shipping data report

Received my report today. Confirms what I already knew.

However, my trim tag production date is K14 or June 14, 1972. The report data indicates the GM official production date was 6/15/1972.

Is this one day difference something that occasionally happened? If so is there a valid explanation someone would offer up.

    Thanks

    Jerome,
There are several like yours including my -66. June 23 instead of the 22nd.

Trim line happened before the pay line. Simple. Could be longer than just one day also.

It maybe simple, but I simply do not understand what you are trying to tell me.

Along the assembly line the trim tag was attached first (trim line) then later down the line there was an established line for accounting purposes at which time the car was considered finished production wise. I understand that this varied. Anyway, for weekends holidays etc that line time distances could be longer or shorter. I don't remember the ref. for this, look at Birthplace of Legends or Bizzocos' 69 Stingray Guidebook as they talk about production stuff.

The difference in my trim tag date and shipping report date was acftually two days. June 13th vs June 15th 1968. Must have set somewhere for a day!

Thanks Dale. Your explanation has given me a much better understanding/relationship of the data in NCRS's "Shipping Data Report" and the information on the trim tag of my '72.

                Jerome,

Take a look at some of the other recent posts concerning the shipping reports recently distributed by NCRS. It looks like most (but not all) of them have a production date of the next business day after the date on the trim tag. I received my letter yesterday, which listed the production date as Feb 6, 1970. My trim tag date is B05 (Feb 5).

                Thanks,

I'd be curious to know if any cars have a trim tag date that is actually the same as the production date.

                    Jerome -

I explained this a few weeks ago, but I can't get the "search" function to find it.

The short version is this - the car got its trim tag with the body build date (for St. Louis-bodied cars) at the beginning of the Hard Trim Line, after leaving the Paint Shop. It proceeded through the system to the end of the Final Line, where it was driven off (with no interior or seats in it) through toe-in, roll-test, water test, mechanical repair if required, and Paint Repair, to the Final Trim Line, where the interior trim was installed. The car was completely assembled at the end of the Final Trim Line, and that was the "pay point", where the car was officially counted as "produced".

The car could be delayed several hours or as much as an entire shift between the end of the Final Line and the beginning of the Final Trim Line, so it wasn't unusual for the "date produced" to be the day after the body build date on the trim tag. Could be three days difference if the car got its trim tag on a Friday and didn't hit the "pay point" until Monday.

Should be plenty of them out there - if a car hit the beginning of the Hard Trim Line during the first couple of hours of the 1st shift, it could easily hit the "pay point" at the end of the Final Trim Line before the end of the second shift.

That makes perfect sense- they key is that it would have to a trim tag stamped within the first couple (literally 2?) hours of first shift. In theory, out of a two shift day of 8+8 hours, that would make 2 out 16 cars or 12.5% with a same day production date.

That's in theory, where I used to live.

My 1966 St. Louis coupe has a Official GM Production Date of April 20, 1966. My trim tag says H20 so mine are the same.
