    Fan ID

Radiator fan, 7 blades, 18" diameter, flathead rivets, stamped "front", "H" and "94"; 4 rivets in a "Y" pattern; apparent balancing technique is removal of material in circle pattern (various sizes) on the back side of the "fin" that attaches to the blade. Ends of the blades tip TOWARD the radiator. No scanner available for photos.

Your 18" dia. 7-blade fan with 2 1/4" pitch stamped "H", "FRONT", and "94" is GM # 3956684 made by Hayes-Albion (H-A part # 159432). This fan was used on 1969-1970 Z28's and other 1969-1970 HP engines (but NOT the Corvette) as well as with 1969-1970 models with AC. This fan is usually listed as the optional fan in 1969-1970 assembly manuals along with the fan made by the Schwitzer company stamped "3947772", "914087" and a date code on each of the 7 blades.

Both the Schwitzer and the Hayes-Albion were installed on the assembly lines in 1969 & 1970.

NOTE: Early 1969 models used an almost identical 7-blades fan with a 2" pitch , either GM # 3937779 (stamped "3937779", "914033", and a date code on each blade) made by Scwitzer or GM # 3947838 made by Hayes-Albion (stamped "H", "FRONT", and usually "84" ).

The Hayes-Albion fans (GM # 3947838 and # 3956684) do not appear in the Chevrolet parts catalog but do appear in the assembly manuals. Apparently Chevrolet only sold the Schwitzer fans (GM # 3937779 and # 3947772) over the counter.

The fans with 2 1/4" pitch mentioned above are quite common while the fans with 2" pitch are quite hard to find since they were only used on "early" 1969 models.

Thanks, David. Now I can take it to a swap meet and someone asks, I don't have say "Don't know. What do you want it to fit?".
