    Questions about 1956's

In the few short months I've owned my '56, there are some questions that I still have unanswered that I would like to ask...

    1) Do black with red interior cars have a black heel guard on the carpet under the pedals or is it red? I see both and don't know which is correct. I think black is.

    2) Do 1956 convertible tops have a fabric liner on the inside like some 57's that I have seen?

I ask the above 2 because I paid CoastCorvette to buy and install 100% NCRS correct carpet and convertible top with date code. My carpet has a red heel guard and no liner on the inside of the convertible top.

    3) Do original 1956's have black on the underside of the body? Mine does and it seems the same as the original paint on the frame. I've read that it should be bare fiberglass but I also read of other originals cars like mine that do have the black underside. Which is correct?

    4) Seat belts. The Corvette blackbook says that all 1956 seatbelts are dealer installed and are a blueish/silver, like a light blue. The ones that were in my car were red so I had CoastCorvette remove them. The more I look at them though and look at pictures of other original cars, they seem like they might be correct afterall. Were red seatbelts available for dealer install in late 1956?

    5) Breather. My car seems to have the original breather, the top matches all of the pictures in the JG and online. It is vented though and I keep reading that '56 should not be vented. Which is it? Also should it be black with the orange label or silver? Mine looks like it was sivler but is now light brown.

    6) Fuel filter. My filter now has an original carboard filter element and I ordered what was advertised as an original correct replacement but it's metal and heavy, not cardboard. Is the cardboard one not correct?

    7) If a car does not have, say a heater, would it have just a plain knob that matches the rest or some other kind of delete knob?

    8) Rear block vent tube. Mine is going down the drivers side, is that correct for my car with the original or should it be going down the passenger side? I read both and my engine was rebuilt back in 1964 so it could have been reversed.

    9) CHEVROLET on the base engine red valve covers. Was it painted silver or red just like the rest of the valve cover? I have seen and been told both.

I know some will just say read this or that but I keep reading conflicting things on these topics, that is why I ask. Also, my goal is not perfection for judging but perfection in terms of what is correct for my exact car based on options and build dates. I know that in a few circumstances, what the JG may say is correct is not always really correct and that mistakes do happen. While my car is very original, it's not 100% original.

    Thank you!

    Re: Questions about 1956's

    Alexander,

I'll venture the following for your #3 & 4 questions:

My early '57 (Nov '56 build) was black underneath except the pass compartment floor which was unpainted (some light primer & color overspray) from bottom of the foot board to the bulkhead behind the seats. From there to the rear incl spare tire well, wheel well to wheelwell and all the way up into the recess where the shock crossmember resides, it was blacked out.

My car had red seatbelts which match the description of those available through dealers at the time. Can't say they were installed when the car was brand new, but pretty confident the original owner would have done it.

    Hope this helps some.

Thanks for the comments on those questions. I knew the blacked out underside was correct. I'll have to save those red seatbelts I have from the trash then and clean them up to post pictures just to be sure.

You realize, of course, that there's no reason to remove/discard seat belts on Corvettes not originally factory equipped with them...

The Judging Reference Manual, Section 2, Rule 25, provides a specific set aside for judges NOT taking deductions for the addition of aftermarket seat belts on '53-57 cars in the interest of owner/occupant safety.

          Alexander -

Most, if if not all, of those issues are covered in the latest (5th edition) of the '56-'57 JG.

I've restored several 57's, and the underside of the underbody was unpainted natural fiberglass, except for some overspray on the rear of the spare tire tub.

I do, which is why I will allow a dealer installed seatbelt to stay. I just want to confirm if it's the original dealer installed seat belts and if not, track down correct ones.

              Ok, I'll take another read.

              Thanks!

                Alexander -

I don't know that there was any such thing as a "correct" dealer-installed seat belt in 1956; consider that there were ZERO cars with seat belts in 1956, and not many aftermarket belts were available in those days. From a judging perspective, it doesn't matter - you can install any type and color you like, with no deduction.
