    1969 L46 Oil Pan questions

    Hi again........
I have reviewed the archives looking for the correct information on what the part number and capacity is for this oil pan. The GM publications list part numbers for the oil pan as 3820000 (5qrt) for 1969 exc sp. H/Per. The L46 is the optional 350HP small block, is this what is refered to as sp. H/Per? Or was sp. H/Per for the LT1 that came out in 1970? The 69-72 W/sp H/per indicates 3956670, is this correct for L46 or LT1 only?

So, what Oil pan should I have in the L46? What capacity is it, 5 qrt or 6 qrt? In my quest for the correct oil pan, what other years and engines would this oil pan be applicable to?

    Thanks.........

The pan that was used for all 1969 Corvette small blocks was the GM #3820000. There was supposed to be an LT-1 for 1969 but it was canceled. That information didn't get completely rooted out of the P&A catalogs, though, and the "SHP" they refer to was the LT-1 "which never was" for 1969.

The 3820000 oil pan has a 4 quart capacity and the oil system for a small block with that pan is 5 quarts, including filter. As a matter of fact, most LT-1's used the 3820000 pan, too. Only early 1970 LT-1 and all 1970-72 ZR-1 used the larger pan.

The GM #3820000 pan was used for all 1963-74 Corvette small blocks except those few that used the larger pan (63-65 with 340, 360, 365, and 375 plus the above-referenced early 1970 LT-1 without power steering and 1970-72 ZR-1). The 3820000 was not used for any other Chevrolet application; it was a Corvette-only piece.

      Joe,
Thanks, I figured you would chime in here and it is much appreciated. At least I am looking for a more common corvette only oil pan.

If you're referring to the 63-72 small block "trap door" pan, it was 5 quarts. The SYSTEM capacity with filter was 6 quarts.

              Joe,
Now I am confused again. The 'trap door' pan was used on which engines? I assume the mid-sixties high HP and FI small blocks.

              Thanks.......

No need to be confused. As far as SMALL BLOCKS go for the 1963-72 period, the following used the 5 quart "trap door" pan (with 6 quart SYSTEM capacity):

                1963-65 with 340, 360, 365, and 375 HP

                Early 1970 with LT-1

                All 1970-72 ZR-1

                That's it.

C1 Corvettes used a completely different oil pan configuration than 63 and later. Some of these with SHP used a pan with a "trap door" but, as I say, it's a completely different configuration pan than those used for ANY 63 and later.
