    Muncie tag 72

My 72 4sp does not have the typical assembly date code stamped on it. It only has some smaller numbers so lightly stamped I can't read them in the car. I don't see a CC stamped just numbers. It is a 661 with 648 side and 764 tail.
    The tag is 6271516WD
What does this code tell you?

    Re: Muncie tag 72

As with all aluminum tags on transmission side plate bolts, 6271516 is the part number for a 72 four speed transmission, "(exc close ratio)", which means it's a wide-ratio transmission.

In the case of other component codes, "WD" appears to be information about the plant of origin. I don't remember seeing any letter suffix on my 70 Muncie part number tag, but it's been a while since I've seen it. The mystery is deepened by there not being any stamped codes on the case (Edit: Only "lightly stamped numbers"). Maybe someone else can provide some light.

Edit: To be clear, the part number above (6271516) is a service part number out of a contemporary parts book. Check the 72 assembly manual to determine the actual production part number. If the production number is different than the service part number, then, depending on a good close reading of the "lightly stamped numbers", early warranty replacement of the transmission may have occurred.
