    VIN swapper charged

Since we all have an interest in numbers:

And don't ask me what a pressure number is, because I don't know.

    Changed link.

    Terry,

The link went to a classified ad when I clicked on it.

        Taken from article:

"He ground off the engine's identification number because it did not include a pressure number."

Does this constitute one of the illegal charges? Sounds like and operation necessary to restamp a "RESTORATION" engine block................Comments?

Many states now have laws covering the things necessary to create a "restoration engine"; check out the Iowa law below, which makes restamping a felony unless it's actually done by an official of the Iowa Transportation Department.

Considering he tried making it something it's not rather than restoring it to original, I'm glad he got busted after selling it! He tried ripping off the buyer!

I don't think the charge was specifically for altering the engine stamp. He swapped the VIN plates and that is definitely not legal.

Bingo! The charges related to chop shop violations.

WOW, those guys in Iowa have it rough. I don't think many judges would accept the way the "department" would identify one's restoration block stamping.........

I wonder if any state allows the tampering of VIN's as stampings, excluding the VIN tags?

I am not a lawyer but from the way I read it & the caveat under it it sounds like you can put SN that matches the ID & title & not another one for a different on like the trim tag guy. The BMV would have to Ok a # if there was no factory SN or title.
