Sounds like the seals in your A/C compressor are leaking. You had best evacuate the system, remove the compressor and send it out for repair. Check out these folks in Tampa; they did a great job in helping me rebuild my OEM R-12 A/C system.

High performance / High efficiency Chevy Corvette Air Conditioning Systems and OEM restoration parts from Classic Auto Air.

Also, keep in mind that as Freon hits the atmosphere with moisture in it, it produces a hydrochloric acid residue which when mixed with the compressor's mineral oil can cause significant damage to your classic Corvette's engine bay. Sooooooooooo, attend to your seal leaks as soon as practical.

If a significant amount of oil, remove the compressor and replace the seal with a GM or AC DELCO ceramic seal with a felt wick. Part number are in the archives, or ask again and I'll find and post the numbers.

Best to install a compressor seal oil shield. There is a guy in Ohio that sells them.....or you can make one yourself. I can provide the guys name and phone if you want. The shields he has work best on C3 cars, but also fit C2. He said some C2 cars experience a slight hood rub.

If you are trying to remove the oil from the fiberglass prior to painting, then that is a whole 'nuther subject. Some good info in the archives, but acetone and heat and repeated applications are used to remove the oil....followed by some sanding and then gel coat to seal. Even then it's not 100% guarantee.

Have replaced the seal and installed a shield but the oil/feon is still present and will come through the paint as before. A earlier member suggested a company here in Arizona and their suggestion was a product availat Napa called "AC Flush" which we will try next. The big concern is the paint on the top side of the hood....................thnks all, keep the suggestions coming....................Bill #20328

          Bill:

If compressor oil has fully permeated the paint on the underside of the hood and the hood fiberglass, it will eventually come through the exterior paint.

Possibly it has not yet gotten all the way through the fiberglass. If no additional oil is added, you MAY luck out.

I hope you do......I was not so lucky.

Are you sure that the oil is coming from A/C compressor? It could be coming from somewhere else like the fan clutch. Check it out.

I wonder if the stuff they sell at Lowes to remove oil from concrete before you seal it with the floor epoxy paint would work. It is amazing the amount of oil it pulls out of the floor. You would have to remove the hood and flip it upside down. I don't know if it would do any damage itself. If someone had an old hood it would be an interesting test.
