Best vendor to purchase rear spring

    Michael,

This question is one of the most common ones on the DB. Have you searched recent postings or the archives. For the 9-leaf spring, many people suggest Eaton Detroit Spring. See previous postings for details.

In the Driveline, Corvette USA are advertising new rear springs. Have not seen one, so I don't know how close they are.

          Gary -

Those are the 7-leaf F40/F41 springs; I haven't seen them advertise the standard 9-leaf version.

They have indicated a 9-leaf standard spring is "in the works", but I have not yet seen an ad where they are completed and ready for sale.

If interested, I would call to get their schedule.

America's Finest Corvettes is the company making the springs (www.corvetteusa.com) and they had the spaces next to me at Carlisle. He indicated they are very close to having an accurate 9 leaf spring. The Eaton Detroit spring has significant differences from the original in dimension and configuration. I am told that the ride height is also too high like all other aftermarket springs. I purchased one from them, painted it, and added the retainer cups only to find a very nice original just days after I completed the Eaton spring so I can't say for sure if the ride height is right or not since I didn't install it.

Re: best vendor to purchase rear spring

A lot of OE rear leaf springs that are perfectly serviceable get thrown away and replaced with not-so-good aftermarket springs.

So the natural question is why do you think the spring needs to be replaced?

                  Jeff -

When I bought my '67, it had some generic replacement 10-leaf spring on it. I got an Eaton 9-leaf, painted it, added Quanta liners, installed it, and my rear ride height was about 3/4" high; after a couple of hundred miles, it settled, and the ride height was right on the money - I'm happy with it.

                      John:
That's good to hear. As I said, I haven't installed the Eaton spring so I can't say from first hand experience but several other chapter members have told me of the exact opposite result. The spring on the car now is an aftermarket that appears identical to the Eaton and I needed end bolts several inches longer to get the right height. That's why I bought the Eaton.
