    Re: 63 driveshaft/halfshaft finish

Is it the same situation with the 65 cars? Should the drive/half shafts be black? There is some rust on my driveshaft and I would like to clean and paint it

Mike, I believe the disc brake cars did not get the blackout due to fear of overspray on the brake parts, yours were probably 'natural'.

I guess the next question is whether there is some coating that I could put on that would keep them from rusting?

Yes, there are. Some are durable and others not. "PreLube 6" and "WD-40" are two that are not too durable but probably won't result in any judging point loss. Low gloss CLEAR urethane paint is one that's more durable but may be detected and result in a judging points loss.

            Mike,

If at some point in the future you want to paint the rear components black to be more correct, I would steer clear of prelube 6 or any other oil base spray as it will prevent the black paint from sticking.

A light coat of flat clear may the best choice.

For Mike's 1965 the driveshaft and half shafts would be incorrect if painted black. So, the PreLube 6 , WD-40, etc. would only be a problem if he later decided he wanted to paint those components black in order to be incorrect.

That's a '63 Pilot unit that was probably ordered by Chevrolet Show & Display to be painted like that; that's why it's in a body spray booth in the middle of the Paint Shop. That was NOT done in regular production.

I am in the process of restoring my '64. I had to make a decision about paint or bare metal. The JG for '64 says bare metal for the diff, the drive shaft, the half shafts, U-joints and lower shock mount among others. Since the judges look for this, that's what I did. Once I made that decision I had to consider corrosion. I sprayed the shafts with Pre-Lube 6 and the diff with Fluid Film. Both produced a similar finish and show no signs of corrosion although it has only been 4 to 6 weeks. I know it may be a problem to paiint them if the JG changes but meanwhile they are what the judges will be looking for and should not deteriorate in the meantime. I'll deal with paint sticking if/when the time comes.

You will need to re-apply the PreLube 6 from time-to-time, but you won't need to do it very often unless you drive the car in inclement conditions which you likely don't.
