removing or installing a 1954 six cylinder engine

What do you attach to on the 1954 Corvette six cylinder to either remove or install the engine with an engine hoist?

Joe, sometimes GM has extra threaded holes on the cylinder head which may let you thread a bolt through the chain or engine hoisting fixture.

I just installed mine with the transmission (cast iron powerglide) attached. I used the second to the last row of two head bolt holes to attach the chain from the hoist to in order to get the balance I wanted. Then I used a ratchet strap attached from the chain attaching point on the hoist and looped it around the tranny mount area at the back of the transmission to raise and lower the assembly as necessary to clear everything. Went in like a hot knife through butter.

Back when I pulled the engine I was a little too leary of attaching bolts to the side of the head because the whole assembly is so heavy. I wasn't sure about the integrity of the cast iron and I don't like the idea of lifting all that weight with a couple 3/8 bolts screwed in sideways then pulling the whole thing over the hood and grill of my car. I decided to go the safe route and pull the head while it as still in the car and use head bolt holes to lift the engine. I made it easy on myself and my friends since I used the engine hoist to lift the head off after removing the head bolts, rocker assemblies and push rods, too.

My back at age 54 is still in pretty good shape...and I'd like to keep it that way....so when I put the head back on this weekend I'll drop it on with the engine hoist, too.
