    Stolen 1967 Corvettes

Was recently told a story that the first 32 or 33 cars where stolen from GM and some people from the assembly plant where arrested. Is this true?

Do not know where these stories come from. Is there a 67 Corvette number 00001?

    Ralph,

I was told the first six 67's built were used by GM as promo cars. If that is true, then body #1 would have vin #100007. However, body #1 does exist and it has vin #100005. Also, I do know body #35 has vin #100041. So, whether GM took the first six bodies for promotion or randomly selected bodies from the first bodies built, I am not sure.

As for the promotion cars, I would imagine some of these cars do exist. As for the first body built(for GM promotion), I do not know.

Maybe someone else can give some input.

As far as the first 32 - 33 cars being stolen, it could have been one hell of an event and never happened!

Per C2 Corvette Registry, Job number 31 has VIN #31
Does not list the body number.
        Job #176 has VIN#00184 and Body 0081

        How do these numbers relate?

Any thoughts why not all C2 owners do not list their cars on the C2 registry.
Seems list it would be an ideal data base for all of us.

Bob McDorman is auctioning off #7 on Nov 6, 2010.

            Ralph -

Body Shop Job Numbers ( the 176) frequently went out of original Body Shop sequence in the Paint Shop due to re-runs and seam repairs, and arrived at the first station on the Hard Trim Line (where the VIN was assigned) behind units they were originally in front of.

Also, the body numbers on the trim tag (the 0081) incremented separately for coupes and convertibles; each body style had its own separate numbering sequence.

Here's #5; definitely a promo car, with COUPE body #1. Trim tag stamped 13th of June .

                Now I am really confused.
                Car#00005 has a build date of K13 and a body# S1. Isn't K13 April 13, 1967 and or is it June 13, 1966.

OOps .. my bad . The K13 on this particular St. Louis 1967 pilot body indicates JULY 13th of 1966, or 2 weeks before the end of 1966 model year production. K indicated June for 1966 Dow Smith bodies, as well as for regular (late) 1967 production from both A and S sources.

Sounds like another old Corvette Myth.

There will only be ONE VIN #1; there will be FOUR BODY #1s - coupe &
convertible St Louis & coupe & convertible AO Smith.

It appears the pilot line cars were not AO Smith bodies.

When were the AO Smith bodies cut into production?

Is the VIN of the first AO Smith body '67 known?

So what does "pilot line" have to do with anything? Yes, I'm sure that in June/July 66, the initial conversion line work was done in St Louis. But AO Smith was going to have to do the same for THEIR process. BUT SOONER OR LATER AO SMITH CV BODY #1 AND COUPE bODY #1 WERE BUILT.
The previous message were so bound up in "#1" importance that the terms were being misused. There was only ONE 1967 with VIN #1.

The first AO Smith vin I am aware of is #164, a 327/300 coupe.
