    C3 Rear Sway Bar Brackets

Can someone confirm if this is correct as far as the finish on these items.
1- the link that goes from sway bar to trailing arm- semi gloss black 2- th bracket on top of the trailing arm is olive drab 3- the small bracket that goes inside the trailing arm is natural

    Sheldon -

I'm not a C3 guy, but those parts are all identical to the same rear stabilizer parts used on midyears, and the bracket bolted to the top of the trailing arm on midyears is semi-gloss black, not olive drab. Does your JG say they should be olive drab?

Yes, John, it does. One of many mistakes in the manual. I wish I could remember who it was insisted it was olive drab. I would cut of his judging points.

I was hoping to trap that person with this question, but alas no joy this time around.

Maybe he saw one built for the Army that required Mil-Spec paint on the bracket (and "TP"-numbers stenciled at 12 o'clock above each wheel opening)

I was petty sure it was supposed to be balck but then I saw it in the JG and I started to wonder. What about the other two peices was I correct on those, semi gloss black for the link and natural steel for the small peice that goes in the trailing arm?
          Thanks Sheldon

            Hi Sheldon
I recall the "link" should be natural steel which holds the sway bar and bolts to the triangle brace which is semi black.

The link piece should have a logo stamped on it to be original. GM replacements don't have it.

The small steel bracket is natural steel which sits inside the trailing arm where the triangle bracket(semi gloss) bolts to.

The olive drab color is actually the round bushing at the bottom of the link. This bushing is olive color and it sits inside the Triangle bracket

            Hope this helps.

              Grant,

Any chance you can get us a color picture for the next TIM&JG? That would save us a whole lot of words.

                Terry-----

Attached are photos of a new GM GM #3872955 bushing. These are old stock SERVICE going back about 25-30 years. Of course, this bushing was first used 45 years ago. In any event, my recollection is that the older bushings might have an "olive drab" outer bushing SHELL. However, I do not recall them as having an "olive drab" colored elastomer component. It's possible they did, though.

These bushings are embossed on the elastomer as follows:

                "HARRIS"

                "62564"

                "33"

                "F9"

Harris has been a supplier to GM for this type of bushing for over 50 years. I feel pretty confident that they likely supplied these bushings as far back as 1965.

                  Hi Terry
Here is a photo of the NOS Triangle brace with its original semi gloss more like satin partial gloss black finish.

In the Picture is the NOS bushing in the single bag and there is a slight color of green or I guess Olive drab. This single bag is older than Joe's NOS bag.

The picture also shows on the left an original untouched linkage with bushing intact with the olive drab color has eroded away and on the right a restored linkage.

Here is a picture of an over the counter replacement NOS Linkage and bushing kit. The linkage does not have the Stamp Rite but the bag that contained the NOS bushing is a definite Olive Drab color.

I have some NOS Bushings in a single bag like Joe's in the newer 80's packing and they are the same as Joe's showing no Olive drab.

The linkage as you can see the left is original and the right is restored. Stamp Rite on the bracket vs NOS linkage brackets with no stamping.

I know the linkage with the Stamp Rite is correct for rear sway bar applications 1967 1968 1969 and possible 1970 1971 1972

I will have to look at my 71 454 and see if the linkage has the Stamp Rite stamping.

Maybe, Terry you can forward what info I have for the judging manual.
                  Hope this helps.
