Relation between written number on Tank Sticker and crayon number on body of a '68

Just a quick question for a friend; as an example, I attach a pic to show the written number "22" on another '68 car -- not the one I'm asking about.

The latter has pencil number 328 on the order copy and 356 elsewhere in crayon on the body panels.

I understand either number has little relation to the last 3 digits of the VIN; am I right ?

    TIA

Wayne, I believe that the the number #22 is a job number, this came up before in the last few months, My 72 coupe order copy has the #38,And in the upper right hand cornor there is the #419 which is the date my car may have started production, this is the number on the toe board of my car. and on the underside of front R/fender is the #19 also.(my car is a( apr. 19th car)

I think the job numbers were from 1-100. correct if I am wrong.

The body number is a body job number and has no relationship to the VIN or order copy number. The order copy number has a relationship to the VIN generally the last 2 or 3 digits are the same as the VIN or 1 or 2 digits off.

        Wayne

William is correct in stating that the order copy number written on the tank sticker is related to the vin, but 68 was different then most years on how closely they followed each other.

In the below link Al Grenning gives a explanation for 1968:

I believe the job numbers went from 1 to 500 and then started over again. They had no relationship to any other number although, I suppose THEORETICALLY, if job 1 for any given model year was a car with the VIN number of 1, you could figure out what the job number should be for any particular following VIN. In practice, though, I think there were factors which could have caused the THEORETICAL relationship to be altered. They were strictly an internal plant numbering system and really had no other significance.

Interesting zone & dealer codes, any info on the car?

Dick -- Many Canadian-delivered cars came with zone 21 and dealer 000. Don't know why -- I have other examples.

This was a way back in the early '80's. The owner of the local Corvette shop knew I liked documentation, so he reaches up (car was on the hoist) and rips what he could off the tank and hands it to me; believe it was something he just bought, maybe to part out.

I have the tank sticker for a 72 coupe, wiht the #200 written in pencil on the sheet. These are also the last three digits of the VIN.
