    Restoring underside of body-removing paint??

This winter I plan on restoring the chassis and undersied of the body on my 62. A previous owner painted most everything black, including the fiberglass underneath.

What is the best way to remove the paint on the fiberglass and return it to the original looking finish/appearance (or as close as posible)?

Am I better off just doing a through cleaning (wirebrushing, etc), and then paint it to look like the raw fiberglass?

    Thanks,

    Tony

Tony, Lacquer thinner will aid in the removel of the black paint, or you can use paint remover,If your using a spray can type, do not spray directly on the surface, spray onto a rag up close to rag and away from your cars painted surfaces. make sure that your wifes car is out of the garage or your car.

Thanks Edward. I was not sure of laquer thinner would damage the fiberglass.

Power wash the underside first and then use lacquer thinner and 3M scuff pads. Works great.

Thanks very much for the info. This is on my winter project list that I am planning now

Figured I would ask since I just wanted to be sure not damage the fiberglass.

I just finished doing the underside of my 67. Jasco paint stripper followed by a thin putty knife and then lacquer thinner soaked rags did a clean up job. Plenty of lacquer thinner soaked rags was the key to get is to look as virgin fiberglass as others stated.

Stubborn creases are done with a steel wool and stripper.

It took all day and be sure to cover garage floor.

              Tony,

If you decide to use lacquer thinner please do the work outside of your garage -- regardless of how inconvenient that is. Lacquer thinner is very flammable as are the fumes. The fumes are not good for your health. Do not have anything else around the car that might generate a spark. Please be careful lest you lose your car and the contents of your garage.

Move the wife's car out of the garage...that's good. An important safety tip to prevent personal injury.
