I have been considering getting another corvette and have been looking all over the place for a real no fake cars a real 1966 427-450hp convertible. I would consider all 1966 L72 convertibles but would prefer the early 450hp cars before Vin# 2881 early before November 65. Must have original drivetrain and prefer paperwork documentation. I have looked at so many fake bigblock cars lately its unreal. Consider all good cars from projects to restored. Any colors but Nassau blue or white.

Matthew, stay patient and you will find what you are looking for. I am sure that you know this but just in case you didn't, there is no difference between the early and late L72 cars. Go to meets and ask questions and make contacts. Hire an expert to go over a potential purchase with you. This will help you find the car of your dreams. Good luckLast edited by Steve B.; September 29, 2010, 06:13 PM.- Top

Re: 1966 corvette 427-450hp
Dennis,
Actually GM did make a 450 HP in 1966. However they downgraded the horsepower rating on the 427 engine due to insurance company concerns.
There are original window stickers out there with the 450 designation. Also lots of members with these early cars, who may weigh in.
Example of PC in the '60's.
Regards,
Dave- Top

Re: 1966 corvette 427-450hp
I do not know when the vin number change over was, but the early production 1966's came with a 450 HP decal on the air cleaner, as we had a few ( maybe 3 or 4 ) received at the dealership I worked at in San Diego.- Top

Re: 1966 corvette 427-450hp
Steven is right, I have read Eric's very comprehensive study in detail and he (Everett Ogilvie) has found a documented 450 HP in the 4800 serial number range. In my correspondence with him, he felt it's possible that there could even be some 450/L72's in the 5000 range (approximately mid Nov. build dates) but none documented as of yet to my knowlege. There are many physical identification features that need to exist to verify L72 authenticity, but the only real way is "authentic documentation". I created a "check list" that defines all the features that need to be identified that I compiled for my own benifit which you are welcome to, but again, the only true way is via documentation. ---- and to think, it only boils down to a simple decal which may have cost GM about 10 cents and the profound affect it's had on collectability and the history of the 1966!
