Jim, not a answer to your question, however I bought a rebuilt replacement smog pump for my original owner 68 from Auto Zone. It has a black filter instead of one like my well used white one on the original smog pump and was a perfect replacement otherwise.

Yes, I believe the pump itself is the same, however, the diverter valve -- which is bolted to the pump output will most likely be different.

Exactly the same pump, GM #7803948, was used for all 1969 Chevrolet applications except L-88/ZL-1. The latter used the 1968 style pump with external relief valve.
