    Need help on a 54

Where is the casting date on a 54 block and what is the correct casting number.

I have a line on a 54 truck engine and transmission ( reasonably priced ). I know there are some differences between the Corvette transmission and the passenger car transmission..but could I drop in the 54 truck engine and transmission and make it work.

Understand I need the side draft carbs etc.

I do have an original 54 Corvette transmission. How difficult to remove the truck transmission from the engine and install the Corvette transmission.

Joe, is the truck trans a Hydramatic or a Powerglide? '54 Corvette Block casting is 3835911. If truck has a hydro, email me and I'll run you thru the steps, not too difficult, but different than a PG.

Thanks...I have to call the seller and find out. The engine is still in the truck chassis..with the cab removed ( he did confirm it is a 911 block ). The good part, it is a running complete engine.

I have already purchased a restored set of side draft carbs and if I find a good candidate engine or block, I will do the rest.

Could be fun to assemble a 54 engine..they dress out very nice when done.

Joe, the block needs to be a 911 casting, located on the pass side in front of the fuel pump, in a recessed area. The casting number on the head is located on the drivers side just left of center, outside of the valve cover.

Use your 54 Corvette trans and you will be ok. The trans unbolts pretty easily from the block.

The casting date is just behind and above the starter.

Joe, make sure the stamp pad is about 1 inch wide and not narrower. Gary....

Was the 1954 Corvette 241 head used on any other application...truck or passenger car.

what kind of stamp would I expect to see on a 54 truck block stamp pad?

Were truck and passenger blocks stamped F54YG like the Corvette?

Passenger car stampings did not include the "G".

When you find a head make sure you bring a magnet.

For sale. 6 cylinder Chevy head with a JB Weld stamped casting #3836241. Looks correct until you hold a magnet to the numbers. Came off my 1954 Corvette that was fraudulently represented as "numbers matching" although they were right. The numbers did match after they ground off the wrong numbers and stamped the new ones on to make them match. $100 or best offer. Makes great conversation piece.

Seller says the truck engine has the following markings. ( 911 ) block

Behind the starter-G84, CONG. On the left side of the head-383G848. Right side of the head- GM22, B-29-848, 850. The only number I found on the trans. is-3886892GM

You have a July 8th 1954, 911 block. The 848 head is an incorrect casting configuration. The physical geometry of the head is incorrect for 1954 Corvette, in the area of the temperature sender. It will function, but will never pass for a reproduction 241 casting donor head.

It's also going to be missing the bosses cast in to the passenger side to hold the expansion tank bracket. My (bogus) former head had two holes drilled and tapped through the water jacket. The bolts were coated with Gasgacinch and screwed in.
