    Are these correct ignitions shields?

    Hi everyone,

In the photo are the LH side horizontal ignition shields and I want to confirm that these are correct for a '67 SB. The shield on the LH side of the photo is the front shield and the one on the RH side is the rear shield.

From reading an old article from the Restorer (Spring '86) on the ignition shielding for mid-year SB by John Amgwert, the differences are close, so I need advise from those who know.

I'm thinking these are for the 63-65 and not the 66-67 but want to be sure.

Kurt, I think you actually stumped the C-2 experts.

OK; I dug out Amgwert's article and compared with what I believe is a set of '66-7's that I have (based on the fact I bought 'em off eBay with an included distrib. cover that is definitely not '63-5). Can take pics if needed. My conclusion is that you have the '66-7 driver side shielding. It's real tricky to compare a part in-the-hand with a 2-dimensional shielding drawing. Noland's Vol 2 has some detail GM drawings but only for '63 (early and late) and '66.

I suspect you have the earlier shielding. Note the location of the exhaust cutout notch on your aft piece by projecting it right (horizontal). It would seem to be at a depth that would intercept that radial reinforcing crease right at it's apex. The '66-'67 goes deeper ... perhaps 1/2" or so into crease.

Photo attached is from my '66 original. It doesn't show the front piece, but note the deeper upward cut of the trimmed piece to clear the newly redesigned exhaust manifold.

          Regards,

          Jeff

            Hi Wayne,

Based on Noland's book, page # 370 & 371 I would agree. However, based on Jeff's photo, it puts doubt into my mind. I'm guessing that's why Mr. Amgwert's write-up states that it's close and sometimes hard to tell them apart.

My rear sheild's cut-out is appox. 1.625" deep and the front cut-out is about the same.

I took mine off, measured & photographed the cut ... it is 2". See attached photo.

Jeff -- measured the two driver side rear shields I have (not sure how I ended up with doubles ), and they are 2" on the same measure you show. The FRONT driver side has a 2_3/8" cut, following the bent contour at the lip.

Jeff and Wayne - THANK YOU for making a big effort and measuring your sheilds to help me. I was hoping I had the ones I need for my '67. I guess that's what makes the Corvette hobby so much fun!
