    70BB motor mount heat shield

Does anyone know if a '70 BB with ac should have one or two motor mount heat shields? The AIM shows picture of left motor mount with a heat shield, but I can't find picture or reference to right side. I know that in some cases, such as for multiple fasteners, the AIM doesn't show every location. So the fact that I can only see one side doesn't convince me there should only be one heat sheild. And only one heat sheild doesn't make sense to me. Unless the starter is blocking heat from the exhast manifold on right side? Steve

First of all, to avoid any possible confusion, the heat shield was not part of C-60. It was part of the big block engine option. The motor mount shims were part of the C-60 option.

Now, as far as whether a shield was used on the left side only or both sides, I don't know, for sure. However, the GM P&A Catalog indicates that the 1970-72 shield, GM #3980708, was used at 2 per car.

Thanks Joe. I had seen 69 and earlier big block heat sheilds for sale at some of the standard repro outfits - they clearly indicated 2 per car. The only one I could find that had 70-72 was dr Rebuild. The website didn't indicate qty. If anyone out there has an untouched 70-72 big block, I'd appreciate knowing if the AIM is accurate with only one on drivers side. thanks, Steve

I am working from memory, but I seem to recall John Woods writing a story for The Corvette Restorer about those shields. John's passion was 1971 large motors so that story might shed some light on your questions. I don't recall doing the story as Editor, so it would be pre 1999, but that is the best I can do you for a date. We didn't judge C3s until 1985 so it was not earlier than that.

Thanks Terry. I am relatively new to Corvette restoration and don't have copies of old Corvetter Restorer magazines. Sorry if this sounds like a dumb questions - do you know if its possible to do an internet search on these or were they hard copies only? thanks again, Steve

The Corvette Restorer was and for the most part is not on-line. A very few stories have been posted on-line by their authors, but that is the exception.

The NCRS membership office sells copies of parts of the magazine on CD. Take a look at the back pages of The Driveline for an advertisement for that product. It is available either collated by year of application or as a complete set. Both versions are search-able. The latest edition of The Driveline is accessible from the radio buttons at the top of this page. Happy hunting.
