    1967 L79 exhaust clearance

    Hi Everyone,

    Ref. '67 L79 Coupe

Looking for advice as to how clearance I should have between the exhaust pipes and the rear spring? If it matters, it is a 2-1/2" system.

In general terms, Very Little. Actually, depending if you are using factory pipes or reproduction pipes will have a bearing on the answer, as the factory pipes are somewhat flattened under the spring, generally more than the reproductions are. With original systems, it's best to just align the tops properly in the bezels, then tighten the hangers and clamps.

      Hi Bill,

Thank you. The system is Corvette Central's N11 system. The pipe are fairly flat, but like you say no where near as flat or sqauare as the original pipes. I was just concerned about the spring movement and it hitting the spring while driving.

Generally the pipes are quite close to the spring center mount, the mount plate minimizes the spring deflection in that area quite a bit. The major spring deflection is at the extreme ends.

Here's a photo of the LH side. Pretty tight to the spring now and still can adjust to have more room if needed after road testing.

Is this the clearance I should have?

Does the AIM specify a minimum clearance for the exhaust near the rear springs and cross member tubes? .5" min?

The AIM calls out .72" max clearance between the top of the pipe and the bottom edge of the camber strut bracket; doesn't have a clearance dimension to the spring.

                  Thanks John,
I would think if Kurt used the .72"max number at the strut bracket and the spec for the spare tire tub clearence, then, however close to the springs the exhaust falls is OK unless otherwise noted.

(I have to check when I get home but I think the 68 AIM calls out .5" MAX at the strut bracket. I know I pulled that number somewhere other than out of the obvious place)
