    Identifying the Correct Distributor-1968

    Looking for a little advice or tips on jow to indentify a correct 1968 327/300 distributor. The one in my car is missing the aluminum tage and I can't find part numbers on the housing casting or parts internal.

    What can I look for to determine if the distributor I have may be the correct one from the factory?

    Thanks

    It's very difficult, if not impossible, to positively identify a distributor if the ID band is removed. That's because of 2 reasons. First, original distributor part numbers were made up of a combination of particular internal components, most of which are difficult to identify. Second, a distributor could have been re-curved somewhere along the way and, in that case, even if it retains its original components, it's no longer configured as-original. The distributor housing, itself, cannot be used to identify a distributor (except to say that it's a Corvette distributor if it has tach drive).

    The following might indicate that your distributor is original assuming that these components are the ones originally installed:

    1) an "autocam" with the stamped number "I65". The autocam is the cam-like piece attached to the top of the mainshaft. Unfortunately, the number for this shaft is usually embossed on the bottom of the cam and is impossible to see without disassembly of the distributor;

    2) a vacuum control stamped '355'.

        To add to what Joe stated, the weight base should be stamped 530. That's what my 67 300hp distributor has and it's the same part # as 68..
