    Ed, FYI - '56 Owners Manual "Crankcase, 4 Qts without Filter, 5 Qts with Filter.

    Brooks, have you had a chance to pull out the dipstick 3/8" to compensate for the 3/8" shorter upper tube and see what it reads?

      To which I reply, 1957 P&A manual

      56 CORV Pan, oil 5 qt. cap.

      One of these references is wrong, but I have two separate references that say the oil pan is 5 qt. capacity, without the filter.

        Generally, the capacity for a pan when it is shown in the P&A Catalogs will be the capacity of the pan at the full level WITHOUT any correction for additional capacity created by the oil filter volume. Remember, the P&A catalog is only referring to the PART ALONE and not any system that the part is a component of.

          That was my assumption, Joe.

          If the pan really is 5 quarts by itself, and the filter canister is either 1 or 1.5 quarts, that adds up to 6 or 6.5 quarts.

          OK, you guys that have 56 or 57 Corvettes, how much oil to you put in when you change the oil and filter.

          I need to change the oil on my 56 soon as well.

            Brooks, did you fix the oil level measurement issue? I have the same exact problem, after installing same parts you installed from Paragon. The original upper tube installed in the engine was shorter than the replacement from paragon. So, with the correct amount of oil in the engine (5 quarts), looks like upper tube t******* is the next step?

              Re: Lower Dip Stick Tube Length

              Manuel, I have been out most of the day and just now saw your post. In my case the installation of the new loser dip stick tube did not vastly affect the oil level reading on the dip stick. I still had to add another quart to bring the level up to the full mark. According to what I have been able to find out, the dip stick, dip stick tubes (upper and lower) all from Paragon) are the proper length that is shown in old parts books from Chevrolet. I have compared a dip stick and upper tube from a 265 engine I had over 40 years ago to a Paragon reproduction and they appear to be the same. For me the big difference is the oil pans. I have a pan from that same 265 engine and compared it to what is supposed to be a correct Corvette oil pan. I will try to attach a picture of each side by side. Opps! I have posted this picture before and they won't let me post it again. Look in the archives under '56-'57 oil capacity. The Corvette pan has visually a larger capacity. All of the reference material I have says that the capacity is supposed to be 5 quarts with a filter change. I hate to say it but at this point I am just scratching my head. Thanks for your post!                 Brooks;

                I made copies for you of the Chevrolet literature that says 5 quarts without the filter, plus 1 quart for the filter. There are actually two different pieces of Chevrolet literature that say 5 quarts for the oil pan, plus 1 quart for the oil filter canister.

                The owners manual is the only reference that I have found that says 5 quarts with the filter.
